Feed my lamb Community School
Educating our children
Feed My Lamb’s community school objective is to offer holistic education to children, combining their academic education with learning diverse vocational/practical skills that can be used to support themselves and their families’ future. Ultimately, we believe this gives a child every advantage to reach his or her full academic and life skill potential in countless ways.
The current model of education in Uganda as well as our community, see many students leave school without any practical skills to use in their adult lives to support themselves and families. This has accelerated the levels of poverty. Without any hands on practical vocational skills, these girls and boys will be required to depend on their families furthering the poverty cycle.
Equipping youth and community through academics and vocation
At Feed My Lamb Kabarole (FMLK) community school, we provide vigorous education methods that integrate conventional vocational school, placing equal importance on both academic and vocational skills. Feed My Lamb Kabarole (FMLK) is determined to create a place where students and parents will be encouraged to interact during the community based project trainings. In this way, we will be providing an environment where students, parents and elder members of the community will be able to learn from each other while fostering strong communal relationships.
Feed My Lamb Kabarole mission is “To instil value and skills, motivating communities and the younger generation; empowering them to be innovative and self-sustaining.” Projects by their very nature will enhance group participation, learning and thereby tapping into individual interests, talents and capacities, cultivating community. Feed My Lamb Kabarole (FMLK) is resolute to creating an empowering environment whereby people freely gather sharing knowledge and skills for self-sufficiency and development.
Integrated learning
Our primary school started in 2017 and offers an integrated curriculum that combines the usual academic subjects with vocational skills training. We will offer practical skills training in tailoring, knitting, baking, sports, music, dance, drama, computer, mechanical repairing, on-farm agricultural skills, woodwork, metal fabrication and others, side by side with academic subjects. The school also encourages students to learn from, and with, their parents and elders of the community. Adults are welcomed into the school, where an open and shared learning style is nurtured.
Your help is valued and needed
After Paul, Claire’s husband as of 2014 donated the land for the school site in 2015, architectural plans were developed, and fund-raising quickly got underway by our first sponsor: World Development Group. By mid May 2016, we were thrilled to see construction starting. Seven classrooms, offices, a harvest water tank, kitchen block and a pit latrines block were constructed as part of Phase 1 with the first primary school students starting classes in February 2017.
We need additional trainers and facilities. We have some community members that volunteer, we need more. We need to start on Phase 2, and start implementing our strategic plan of introducing the children to the different hands-on training skills and vocational opportunities in the community.
Phase 2 includes construction plans for a workshop block, which will enable vocational training to be started. Our target is to have the buildings underway the beginning of 2018. What an exciting time to be part of our team! Please support and help fund one of our special projects and together we will experience success for our children and community. Keep up with our progress as we grow. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and keep visiting our website for exciting updates.
How can you help?
Our generous givers, enabled us to build the structures for the primary school. However, we continue to need your help and support to attain self-sustainability. Long term, FMLK’s plan is to set up a Secondary and Vocational Training Centre, showcasing our model to other schools in the District and to Uganda as a country. We strongly believe that conventional academic education can be integrated with vocational skills training, a practice that is missing in schools around the country and Kabarole District.
To achieve our goals, we need the continued generosity of those that can come alongside of Feed My Lamb Kabarole. We have many self-sustaining projects that will effectively provide for those long-term goals and serving to achieve the monthly salaries for our teachers, provide for the gap in our current food supply to feed all the children, and help launch the community into independent living. Please consider a monthly donation or gathering a team for funding a special project, and come visit Uganda. See your donations at work.
