Adult Literacy Project
Financial and literacy education
Our rural communities have a high illiteracy rate especially amongst the women, which is at 40% and 25% for men. One of our community initiatives will be working with both men and women to empower them through literacy. Our desire is to offer Adult Literacy focusing on linking our communities’ livelihoods and desires to learning skills and basic problem solving. The program will offer skill-specific training, for example, budgeting, purchase planning and saving practice’s. In addition to literacy and accomplishment, we will link how literacy is important and can be used for personal development in their everyday lives.
One of the biggest gaps we have in Uganda is understanding budgeting and common financial instruction in our communities. Families suffer and sell many assets when school fees and other needs arise due to not understanding the basic budgeting process and over spending at Christmas and other expensive encouraged events. Those that are educated and understand those principles are prepared to buy at low prices, taking advantage of those less educated.
Our scheduled plans for 2018 include starting training sessions available to our Gweri members in marketing skills, saving and micro loan initiatives at no charge. The women of Gweri have already expressed interest in literacy training and interest in learning self-sustaining efforts. Their desire to strengthen their families and their lives is encouraging to us.
Encouraging community involvement
The literacy program will also target anyone over the age of fifteen (15), who had missed the opportunity of formal education during childhood. Women, men and youth will be educated on matters of income generating activities, personal hygiene, good nutrition habits and homestead sanitation improvement. The project will also involve the production of simple illustrated manuals and information materials on the issues of nutrition, nutrition-sensitive agriculture and health. We believe this project will help to improve the development in the rural areas, as community members will be empowered. We have several easy projects that would help rural communities gain some traction towards independent living.
